GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS – Originally released in Imax theaters, this James Cameron directed exploration of the “real” Titanic loses some of its grandeur in the confines of a home theater. Bill Paxton tags along as the self-professed “king of the world” guides robotic cameras into areas of the sunken luxury liner that have never been seen before. The DVD includes the new 90-minute cut of the film plus a whole disc of extra footage, interviews and multi-angle features. 13 GOING ON 30 – Every generation since the original “Freaky Friday” puts their stamp on the whole body swapping routine. You know the drill: kid gets tired of doing homework, walking the dog, taking out the garbage, and dreams of growing up overnight so they can drink, smoke and stay up watching late night talk shows (trust me kids, it’s not as glamorous as it sounds). “13 Going On 30” follows the same formula but with a more romantic angle in mind. Jenna (played as an adult by “Alias” star Jennifer Garner, who comes off much better here than she did in “Daredevil”) is the 13-year-old torn between impressing the cool crowd and hanging out with her obviously smitten next door neighbor, ? (Mark Ruffalo). Via some unexplained magic, she turns up in New York City as an attractive and successful 30-year-old magazine editor. She has everything she ever wanted...except friends, morals, and a half-way decent relationship. It seems the 30-year-old Jenna sold her innocence to make it to the top. It’s a good lesson built into a reasonably good movie. Garner has a flair for comedy and her doe-eyed naivete makes for some giggly moments (her hockey player boyfriend’s striptease is an embarrassing riot!) that teenage girls should identify with. The romance between her and co-star Ruffalo that stretches 30 years is a nice twist on a story that has been there and back again through the decades.
